No turkeys were harmed in the production of this newsletter. These guys live on our farm, but we’re not turkey hunters, so like most of America, our Thanksgiving birds arrived from the store.
All of our 2022 lambs have been sold, so things have gotten a bit quiet here on the farm. Rocco the Ram arrived last weekend, and he is out in the field getting to know his harem. Unlike his predecessor Randy who was a sweet guy, Rocco is one ornery dude. We’re thinking he has the whole “bad boy” thing going for him… |
As we close the books on 2022, we have much to be thankful for, so we’ll jump right in. We owe a huge thank you to Adam the Butcher and Andrew the Manager at The Village Shoppe, and Pam the Butcher at Wagshals. They created a vibrant retail market for BHF lamb, and since we’re new at this, their guidance and patience were invaluable as we learned the butcher shop’s end of the business. They’ve been fabulous partners in every respect. We’re equally thankful for our friends Pam the Shepherdess, Herb and Laura the Mentors, Eric the Ram Keeper, and Professors Tom and Niko of the Cornell Animal Sciences Department. Whenever we weren’t quite sure what to do next, they were ready with advice and a helping hand.
We’re also thankful for our cowboys and cowgirl– our son Robbie and his two buddies Gavin and Ben, and our daughter CC. It was always an adventure roping and wrangling lambs together, and this work crew posted up rain or shine, often in the early morning before they showered up and headed to their high school. Thanks for getting your “Yellowstone” on with us, team. We couldn’t have done it without you.
We’re thankful for the land with which we’re blessed, and the animals under our care. They’ve enriched our family’s lives in countless ways, and we’re proud to play a small part in the agricultural tradition of the Eastern Shore. Coming home to the farm still hasn’t gotten old.
And finally, we’re thankful for all of you, our customers and friends. Our inaugural harvest was successful beyond our expectations, and it was filled with hours of work, education, mistakes and joys. We can’t think of a better way to have spent the past year. Thanks for coming along on this journey with us. |
